Christmas at Biggera Waters puts Santa photos, festive lights, seafood and December dinners within a ten-minute radius of Bayview Beach Holiday Apartments. Staying with us, you are a short stroll from the Broadwater and minutes from the carols and a quiet Christmas Day picnic. Here is the local season, and what to book early.
Where are the Christmas lights and carols near Biggera Waters?
The whole coast lights up through December, and most of the good stuff is a short drive from us. The big one is the Mayor’s Christmas Carols on the outdoor stage at HOTA, held each year in early December: a live orchestra, local choirs, a kids’ zone with a Santa meet, and fireworks over the water to finish. It is free, and it fills up, so arrive with a picnic rug well before dusk.
Closer to home, community carols run in Southport most years, and Surfers Paradise puts on its Christmas Flicks and Fireworks nights, with twilight markets from late afternoon, a film on the beach, and fireworks around 8:30pm. After dark, the neighbourhoods themselves become the attraction. The Gold Coast Light Up competition sees whole streets go all out through December, and a slow drive around after dinner is a free, easy night for kids.
Exact 2026 dates for the carols and the light nights are confirmed closer to the season. We keep the current line-up on our Gold Coast events page, so check there before you lock in your evenings.
Where do we get Christmas seafood and dinner near the Broadwater?
Seafood is the local Christmas tradition, and the address everyone knows is Charis Seafoods at 371 Marine Parade, Labrador, a short drive south along the same road we are on. It calls itself Queensland’s largest seafood retailer, and at Christmas that is not a boast so much as a warning: the prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, oysters and lobster move fast, and the queue in the last two days before Christmas is part of the local folklore. Charis opens 7am to 7pm daily. Order your platters at least a week ahead and collect on the 23rd or 24th, and you skip most of the crush. Come by at 1:30pm any day and you will also catch the free pelican feeding, which is a small event of its own when close to a hundred pelicans turn up.
If you would rather someone else cooked, book early. Christmas lunch sittings at the waterfront restaurants around Southport and Main Beach book out weeks in advance, and by mid-December the good tables are gone. Reserve by late November if a sit-down Christmas Day lunch is the plan. Guests staying with us over Christmas keep mentioning that a self-catered seafood lunch on the balcony, with the kitchen doing the work, ends up being the easiest call of all.
What’s open on Christmas Day around Biggera Waters?
The honest answer: the water. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December in 2026, and it is the one day the coast genuinely slows down. Harbour Town closes on Christmas Day, and the theme parks close too, with Sea World shut on the 25th before reopening for Boxing Day. So the reliable, free option sits right across Marine Parade from us: the Broadwater foreshore stays open all day for a morning swim, a walk, or a long picnic on the grass with the seafood you picked up the day before.
Boxing Day flips the switch back on. Harbour Town’s Boxing Day sales are a Gold Coast institution, and being a couple of minutes up the road means you can be first through the doors and back before the car parks fill. A handful of cafes and the local supermarkets trade limited hours through the Christmas break, so a self-contained apartment with its own kitchen earns its keep in that quiet 24 hours when almost nothing else is open.
A Broadwater Christmas on your doorstep
This is the calm side of the Gold Coast, and that is exactly what makes it work at Christmas. Our self-contained apartments give you a full kitchen for prepping the seafood, a balcony to eat it on, and the still water of the Broadwater a two-minute walk across the road. Harbour Town sits just up the road for the gift run, the carols and light nights are a short drive in any direction, and the beaches and theme parks of the wider coast are close enough for the Boxing Day recovery day. Guests tell us the appeal is the quiet: a family Christmas where the biggest decision is whether to swim before or after lunch.
Questions guests ask us about Christmas here
Is anything open on Christmas Day near Biggera Waters?
Yes. The Broadwater foreshore directly across Marine Parade stays open and free all day, which makes it the easy answer for a Christmas morning swim or a picnic on the grass. Most shops and the theme parks close on Christmas Day itself, so plan a self-catered lunch and lean on the water.
When should I order Christmas seafood from Charis Seafoods?
Order your platters and prawns at least a week ahead, and collect on the 23rd or 24th of December. The two days before Christmas bring long queues at Charis Seafoods, so a pre-order lets you skip the worst of the wait. They open 7am to 7pm daily, and early mornings are calmest.
Where can kids get a photo with Santa near Biggera Waters?
Harbour Town Premium Outlets, a few minutes up the road, sets up Santa photos through December in the lead-up to Christmas. It is the closest spot to us for a Santa visit, and you can knock over last-minute gift shopping in the same trip. Check their site for this year’s Santa dates and times.
What is happening for New Year’s Eve near Biggera Waters?
The Broadwater is one of the calmer places to see in the new year, with families gathering along the Southport foreshore for fireworks over the water. It is a short drive south from us. Surfers Paradise runs the louder beachfront countdown if you want the bigger crowd and later night.
Are the Gold Coast theme parks open over Christmas?
Sea World, the closest park to us on the Spit, closes on Christmas Day but trades normal hours on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, usually 10am to 5pm. Boxing Day is busy, so arrive early. Always confirm each park’s holiday hours on its own site before you drive over.
Christmas at Biggera Waters is really a Broadwater Christmas: seafood from up the road, a swim across the road, and the loud stuff kept to whichever night you choose to drive out for it. If that is the December you want, book your Biggera Waters apartment early, because our Christmas weeks fill first.
